Square wooden hibachi were also called "Hibitsu" and have been universally used from ancient times as moveable heater and cooking grill in Japan.

The hibachi made from paulownia has been used in Japan over many years because the fire retardancy of paulownia was respected.
In addition, since wooden hibachi is very light, everyone has an advantage which can be moved easily.
The square hibachi made of this paulownia can put a bottle and cup and a small dish in the top edge, and there are the withdrawals that small tools can store.
If lid is covered with, it can be also used as a table.

Now the classic hibachi is drawing attention of the modern Japanese.
Hibachi has a long history, even described in “The Pillow Book” a classic of Heian period.
Using charcoal, hibachi was used among upper class being less smoky compared to open hearth using firewood, but it also became widely used by commoners around Edo period.
Among court nobles and samurai, some brazier developed as an interior; toreutic hibachi and brightly colored ceramic brazier were created by that time.
Both hibachi and charcoal have been daily necessities as heaters and cooking fire from the ancient times of Heian up to Meiji, Taisho and early Showa period.
The demands for charcoal decreased as electricity and gas became common, but the value of charcoal is being rediscovered these days.
Some reasons are from its effects such as deodorant and water purification, but it is not only about that.
Charcoal has a particular warming effect that other heaters do not have; a characteristic effect of being healed by slowly being warmed.
In olden days, the family naturally surrounded hibachi in cold wintertime in Japan.
Charcoal has a characteristic of gradually warming the body by its radiant heat.
