Sir James Galway has commented as follows.
"As you probably have noticed I have never really recommended one metal over another when discussing flutes. The fact is that I cannot tell the difference when I am listening to someone play."

Similarly, an aerophone is essentially any musical instrument that produces sound primarily by causing a body of air to vibrate, without the use of strings or membranes, and without the vibration of the instrument itself adding considerably to the sound.

If you can recognize this musical instrument only as a mere cheap child's toy, you must not make a bid by mistake.

Hichiriki is a very important instrument which often plays the main melody line in Gagaku music.
It is a double reed instrument where one side of the reed is pressed flat and placed into a bamboo pipe.
The mechanism to produce its sound is similar to the Oboe.
Hichiriki has seven holes in front, and two on its back.
As a result, the performer can change the volume, the tone quality and the key by manipulating breath and his/her fingers.

Hichiriki is one of the "sacred" instruments and is often heard being played at Shinto weddings in Japan.
Its sound is often described as haunting.

Hichiriki is the most widely used of all instruments in gagaku and it is used in all forms of music aside from poetry recitation.

Hichiriki is derived from the Chinese guan or bili, and is also related to the Korean piri.

Notable non-Japanese musicians who have learned to play Hichiriki include Alan Hovhaness, Richard Teitelbaum, and Joseph Celli.
